Accra, May 17, GNA - AirtelTigo has partnered with Ericsson, a communications service provider, to upgrade and consolidate the network to enhance customer experience.
The move is to enable AirtelTigo unify its network assets between former Tigo and Airtel and ensure a wider nationwide coverage, faster data speed and superior voice quality for customers.
Ms Roshi Motman, the Chief Executive Officer of AirtelTigo, speaking at the signing ceremony said this was a big initiative for AirtelTigo as network was key and core to their business development.
She said AirtelTigo was progressing in their integration and was confident that Ericsson was well resourced with both the latest technology and expertise to do the consolidation and upgrade the network to world class standards.
Ms Motman said a lot of activities would take place on the network from now to the end of 2018 to 2019 but promised that information would be sent to customers on the upgrade when the need arises and minimise disruptions.
She, however, commended the government over the mobile money interoperability system, saying that this would give a big financial inclusion to customers.
Mr Jonathan Adams, the Customer Unit Head for South and East Africa, Ericsson Middle and East Africa, said this was a new chapter for AirtelTigo and was pleased to partner them in their upgrade and consolidation process.
He said this was an exciting time for the Ghanaian economy as AirtelTigo embarks on what promises to be an exciting new phase in the telecom space.
This new partnership, he said, would enable Ericsson help the operator pave the way towards 4G and eventually 5G network evolution in Ghana.
Mr Adams assured that they would help with the consolidation, minimise potential disruptions with the technology.
Millicom International Cellular S.A. ("Millicom") and Bharti Airtel Limited (“Airtel”), announced their intention to merge their operations in Ghana.
This was subsequently approved by the regulator, the National Communications Authority on October 2nd, 2017.
AirtelTigo since the merger has embarked on various activities such as the rebranding of Airtel money and Tigo cash, to AirtelTigo money among others and now the partnership with Ericsson to have wider and happier customers.
