The training was organised by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) to build the capacity of the EHOs who would work with the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area – Sanitation and Water Project (GAMA-SWP)
The new technology “Expanded Sanitary Inspection Compliance Application (ESICApps) was developed to enhance the premises inspection functions of the MMDAs.
The EHOs would use the ESICApps to provide information on access to basic sanitation and potable water, liquid and solid waste disposal methods in residential, food/restaurant and commercial premises.
The ESICApps would also be accessible to all stakeholders with appropriate inbuilt security measures clearly established and documented to enhance monitoring and improve sanitation in urban communities.
Mrs Henrietta Osei-Tutu, an Environmental Engineer of the MSWR in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the training programme, which was being sponsored by the World Bank formed part of component four activities of the GAMA-SWP to strengthen the capacity of the EHOs.
She said the objective of the GAMA-SWP was to increase access to improved sanitation and water supply in low income urban communities as well as strengthen management of environmental issues.
“The MSWR came out with the ESICApps programme for premises inspection by the EHOs for them to capture accurate sanitation development challenges in the metropolis,” she said.
Mrs Osei-Tutu said the Ministry would provide technical assistance to the EHOs and lead the implementation of the ESICApps in the 11 assemblies under the GAMA-SWP jurisdiction.
Mr Anthony Mensah, the Director of Waste Management at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, advised the EHOs to use the ESICApps to collect accurate information.
Mr Harold Esseku, a representative of the World Bank, also urged the EHOs to work hard to improve sanitation in the Metropolis.
