Binduri (UE), May 11, GNA – Rainstorm disaster victims in three Binduri communities – Bansi, Bazua and Kuloku-Gumyoko, have appealed to the assembly for urgent humanitarian aid.
A heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds that swept through these areas caused massive destruction to property and left about 1,256 people displaced.
Some women and children got hurt by flying debris and had to receive treatment at the hospital.
In all, 201 buildings were affected and these included churches, health and school structures.
Some of the victims told the District Chief Executive (DCE), Yakubu Ayinga Abagre, during a visit to assess the extent of destruction that they lost everything – personal belongings and livestock.
The DCE assured them that everything would be done to bring some relief to them - the assembly was going to support them to get their lives back on track.
He added that damaged school and health structures would be repaired to prevent any disruption to the academic calendar and ensure that the people had access to healthcare.
He encouraged property owners to use the right building materials and in their right quantities to reduce the impact of such disasters.
Mr. Louis Laal-Bador, the District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), said urgent steps needed to be taken to repair the damaged roof of school buildings and Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds.
The disaster, he noted, had brought to the fore the need to plant trees to serve as windbreak.
People in some communities in the district should also be relocated to high ground to save them from floods as the rains set in.
Mr. Salifu Ali, a livestock farmer at the Kuloku-Gumyoko, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the storm was a nightmare, tearing down everything in its path.
He said hundreds of livestock had been lost and life could become worse for the already poverty-stricken population that relied largely on their livestock for their livelihood.
