Accra, April 16, GNA - Some Members of Parliament (MPs), have joined the campaign to promote Armwrestling, with the aim of making it a top sport in the country.
The MPs who called for support and recognition of the sport during the 2018 K-Balm Armwrestling Challenge in Accra, highlighted the reasons why the country should be passionate with Armwrestling.
Mr Vincent Odotei Sowah, MP for La Dadekotopon and a Deputy Minister of Communication, called for the need for Armwrestling to be adopted as a top sport in the country adding that, it was time for the Ministry of Youth and Sports to give it recognition.
He said, the Armwrestling Federation must be commended for the efforts they were putting in place to increase the popularity of the sport in the country.
Mr Odotei noted that if the sport was taken seriously, it could be a source of employment to many abled-bodied men in the various communities.
“We all know that any activity that leverages on the energy and enthusiasm of the youth is laudable, because it keeps them from other anti-social vices. And Arm wrestling is a sport which is not very expensive,” he said.
“I encourage the Ministry of Youth and Sports to give full recognition and support to the sport of Armwrestling in addition to the other so called traditional sport. It can also serve as an avenue for the youth to channel their energies into more productive thing. Some of them could form a career and make good living out of it.”
Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, MP for La Dadekotopon constituency and a former Armwrestler noted that, he was “happy Armwrestling is now coming to this country, we have it in a lot of countries.”
He said Armwrestling was a simple sport that bring many opportunities to the youth and had a lot of advantages to the country’s economy. He commended sponsors of the event, Kofikrom Pharmacy for investing in the sport and urged other corporate bodies to emulate.
“Arm wrestling has the potential to give a lot are opportunities to our youth. We have a lot of unemployed youth who are very athletic and who can take up Armwrestling, even as a profession or full time practice. It is a very good sport,” Dr Okoe Boye noted.
The competitions are organised professionally. Dr Kofi Agyekum (Kofikrom Pharmacy) is doing very well. One good thing about Armwestling is that, it is usually played by athletic and fit guys.
