Sunyani, April 9, GNA - The Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Command is investigating the death incident at Newmont Ahafo Mine at Kenyasi in the Asutifi North District where six miners were trapped to death on Saturday afternoon.
The six who were workers of Consar Company Limited, a sub-contracting company under Newmont Gold Ghana Limited (NGGL) met their untimely deaths when the reclaim tunnel roof of the Newmont Ahafo Mine Expansion Project at Kenyasi collapsed.
Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident on telephone to the Ghana News Agency on Sunday in Sunyani, saying that Police had visited the scene of the incident and commenced investigations.
Chief Inspector Oppong gave the names of the deceased as Kwadwo Asare, Gideon Amankwaah, Kwadwo Bismark, Ben Brako, Adjei Wale and Ebenezer Sarfo.
He added that three other workers Musa Sulemana, Kwame Seth and Daniel Dzitor who sustained various degrees of injury were rushed to the Newmont SOS Clinic for treatment, whilst bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the St Elizabeth Catholic Hospital at Hwidiem in the Asutifi South District for autopsy.
Chief Inspector Oppong said at about 13:30 hours that day, one Solomon Kwaku Duah, a Security investigator of Protea Coin Security, also a sub-contracting firm under NGGL Ahafo Mine, and Isaac Banniel Awuah, a Senior Investigator with NGGL reported to the Kenyasi Police that the six workers working on a mill expansion project at the plant site had been trapped to death.
