Kumasi, April 9, GNA – The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is taking steps to reclaim all school lands which have been encroached upon by private developers.
Mr Samuel Anaukwah, Chairman of the Educational Sub-Committee, said the Assembly would use every means, including court actions to protect school lands in the Metropolis.
He was speaking at the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Duase R/C Primary School at the weekend.
Mr Anaukwah said the Assembly had received a lot of complaint about illegal encroachment on school lands and was working to address the situation.
He called on headmasters, assembly and unit committee members to promptly inform the Assembly of such illegal activities for quick response.
Mr. Haruna Ibrahim, Educational Planning Officer at the Metro Directorate of Education, said the government was doing everything to promote basic education.
He said government was providing basic things such as exercise books, test books, and others free of charge to enhance teaching and learning at the basic levels.
Mr Ibrahim urged parents to take keen interest in the education of the children to guarantee their future.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North, Mr Collins Owusu Amankwaa, in an address read for him, urged parents to encourage their children to speak their mother tongue, while at the same time learn to speak the English language, the official language.
He said children who could speak fluently in their local language found it easily to speak other languages.
