Accra, April 5, GNA - The Inter-regional Institute for Maritime Safety and Security (ISMI) will hold a seminar to build technical and legislative regimes of countries to tackle risks associated with offshore oil production in the Gulf of Guinea.
The seminar also aims to ensure safety in the maritime environment.
The five-day seminar, which begins from April 9 to 13 in Abidjan, is in response to the needs expressed by the States of the Gulf of Guinea on different issues linked to maritime safety and security, and law enforcement.
A statement issued to the Ghana News Agency said the seminar is being organised by ISMI with funding from the French Cooperation, expertise from the Centre of Documentation, Research and Experimentation on Accidental Water Pollution and supported by Canadian Company CNR International.
It said for the first time since its inception in September 2015, ISMI would tackle key issues relating to spill risks, characteristics of the coastal states of the Gulf of Guinea situated in the heart of the blue economy, offshore industry and states’ authorities to work together for a sustainable maritime development.
The seminar is to build judicial, technical and operational capacities of countries of the Gulf States as well as enhance the knowledge of managers from the public and private sector to better prevent natural risks linked to those economic activities.
The statement said participants would share country experiences and risk profiles to design approaches on how to mitigate and address the issues holistically.
