Bolgatanga, Feb. 26, GNA - The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) in the Upper East Region, has confirmed that the Agency could not complete some key projects in the region to supply communities with portable safe drinking water for the 2017 season.
The Acting Director of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) in the Upper East Region, Mr John Godson Aduakye said on Monday.
He indicated that even though the water tables of these communities were encouraging, they could not be safe for human consumption because of the high fluoride content discovered in the water tables which posed danger to human consumption.
Mr Aduakye disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bolgatanga and said Government had successfully sourced loan from the World Bank to complete last year’s projects and begin the activities for the 2018-2019 season to supply portable drinking water to more communities in the region.
He indicated that the Agency provided water to a number of communities in the region, especially in the Bongo District and mentioned Balungu with a population of about 4100, Lungu with about 4315 people, Feo with a population of about 4600, Vea with about 1500 people and Namoo with about 5000 all in the Bongo District.
The Acting Regional Director observed that most of these communities had high concentrations of fluoride in their water sources and said the Agency had engaged a consultant to fix the issue of fluoride in the affected communities, and added that in due time the problem would be addressed.
He explained that fluoride when found in water and consumed posed danger to consumers and cited the burning of teeth and sometimes the discharge of yellowish substances on the teeth which usually brought discomfort and embarrassment to affected persons.
