Tamale (NR), Nov 22, GNA - Dr Nana Ato Arthur, the head of the Local Government Services (LGS) has advised Internal Auditors to work hard to safeguard the national purse in ensuring prudent financial management to avoid misappropriation.
He indicated that, the processes and procedures required for prudent financial management of resources were abused and the pro-activeness to prevent fraud and corruption were overlooked thereby retarding development.
Dr Nana Arthur gave the advice in Tamale in a speech read on his behalf on Tuesday during the fourth Annual Congress of the National Internal Auditors’ Association of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDA’s) and the Regional Coordinating Councils (RCC’s).
The three-day event is on theme: “Ensuring effective revenue management –the role of the internal auditors”.
Dr Nana Arthur also advised the auditors to strengthen their capacity to enhance their delivery as the surest way of benefiting from each other to be able to carry out their mandate well.
He said if auditors worked hard and gave professional advice on financial disbursement, it would curb mismanagement, misappropriation and corruption in the country.
Mr Kula John Evans Ansuri-Ne Vella, Acting President of the association said the theme reflected on the responsiveness of the association at ensuring economic and social prosperity through effective planning and execution of projects within organisations.
He said the exclusion of internal auditors from workshops on the annual budget planning hinders their work since their understanding would effectively guard MMDA’s and RCC’s to judiciously use resources for their intended purpose.
Mr Ansuri-Ne Vella lauded government for implementing the public financial management Act 2016 (Act 921) and appealed to government to facilitate the inclusion of members of the internal auditors in the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).
Mr Solomon Namlit Boar, the Deputy Northern Regional Minister reiterated the importance internal auditors play in protecting and preserving the public purse to address the numerous developmental challenges.
He urged the association to be diplomatic and maintain cordial working relations with other actors in the service in other to erase the perception of witch-hunting embedded in minds of others regarding their work.
