Accra, Oct 18, (dpa/GNA) - Several people have been arrested in connection with an illegal oil deal between Italian and Maltese companies and a Libyan militia.
As part of the deal, oil was shipped out of the conflict-ridden North African country and across the Mediterranean to be sold in Europe, the Italian financial police Guardia di Finanza said in a statement released on Wednesday.
The oil was illegally extracted from a Libyan refinery in az-Zawiyah, some 40 kilometres to the west of the capital Tripoli and then transported by ship to the southern Italian island of Sicily.
It was then sold on the Italian and European markets, the statement said.
Among the people arrested were Maltese, Italian and Libyan citizens, Ansa news agency reported. A further three Libyans are wanted in connection with the deal.
