Sunyani, July 27, GNA – Pedestrian knocked downs have seen a slight increase in the Brong-Ahafo from January to June this year, says Mr Samuel Asiamah, the Acting Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC).
He said 67 people were knocked down by vehicles and motor bikes within the period as compared to the 57 knock downs in the previous year adding that many of the accidents occurred at night.
Speaking at the mid-year review meeting of the Commission in Sunyani on Wednesday, Mr Asiamah, who is also the Ashanti Regional Manager of the NRSC, attributed the frequent knockdowns to the lack and low level of street lights in many towns.
He said road accidents killed 130 people within the period under review adding that 179 people in 2016 were also killed by road crashes in the same period.
Mr Asiamah said the number of injures jumped from 435 in 2016 to 460 in 2017 while vehicles involved also reduced from 442 to 374 in that order.
General road accident statistics, however reduced from 317 to 245, a reduction of 23 percent, he said.
Mr Asiamah expressed discomfort with the illegal operations of tricycles in some parts of the region, which he noted were contributory factors to road accidents.
He said the commission has sent a petition to the Brong-Ahafo Regional Security Council (REGSCE) to arrest and prosecute tricycle riders who used their machines for commercial purposes.
Mr Asiamah said tricycles used for commercial purposes were common at Berekum,Techiman, Goaso, Duayaw Nkwanta, Bechem, Kwame-Danso and Chiraa, adding that with the permission from the REGSEC, the Commission in collaboration with the police would embark on an enforcement exercise to clamp down on such operators.
