Accra, June 22, GNA - Mr Isaac Omari Koranteng, the Founder of Save Marriage Foundation, has encouraged fathers to adopt subtle ways of communicating with their children so that they could impart meaningfully in their upbringing.
Mr Koranteng was speaking to a cross-section of young men and couples at the maiden Dad’s conference organised by Junior Shapers Africa (JSA) in collaboration with Cancer Connect Ghana, an NGO.
The conference in Accra sought to inform and educate fathers and young men on the essence of responsible fatherhood and overcoming challenges that confront fathers in their line of duty.
He said: “In the past most fathers were feared, they were seen only as disciplinarians and most children were afraid to come close or even share their problems with them.
“This has not helped in the proper upbringing of children in the present age because times have changed and children can keep secret lives because of technology, which is dangerous.
“In this regard fathers should learn how to connect with their children, to prevent negative peer influences,” he explained
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the side-lines of the conference, Mr Koranteng said his motivation to speak at the event was derived from his experiences as a father spanning more than 24 years.
He noted that fathers played a key role in the upbringing of children and it was high time that some attention was given to the roles they played in keeping order in the home.
He lauded the organisers of the conference for recognising the need to celebrate Fathers since they were the boomers and shakers of the home economy.
The participants were entertained with music from the Ameners Praise Team, an all men musical group and an outstanding piano performance by a 10 year- old John Saade who revealed that he wanted to heal the world with music and medicine since he was aspiring to be a medical practitioner.
Participants were also counselled on finances, stress management and health issues affecting men.
Mr Godfred Yawson, a medical Practitioner advised fathers to exercise regularly and spend quality time with their families to relief stress in order to reduce cardiovascular related ailments.
Issues discussed at the event was about managing finance, which was addressed by Mr Timothy Dzikunu a financial consultant and the CEO of Jayset Consult.
He advocated that fathers should grow multiple streams of income and practice a good culture of savings.
He also cautioned fathers to be vigilant of financial institutions who promised wealth overnight.
“There is so much fraud in the system with some banks promising to double and triple hard earned moneys and end up escaping with the money or unable to deliver on their promises.
“A good saving culture is a gradual process including a well laid out plan,” he added.
He endorsed institutions who were certified by the Bank of Ghana (BOG) and had been in good business for more than 10 years as the best options for investments.
Mr PG Sebastian, a relationship coach told the GNA he was of the view that fathers could change the common Ghanaian notion that “most fathers are irresponsible”, by taking their roles seriously, treating their wives well and bonding with their children
“Fathers of the past generations seem to have lost the chance of relating with their families, which have churned out a group of sons who are ignorant about the concept of fatherhood.
“Men of today therefore need to make a conscious effort to learn by taking advantage of conferences like this to learn from their inadequacies because you do not expect a father to be naturally responsible when he has not been fathered well.
“Through these seminars we can cause an insurgence of a generation of responsible fathers,” he noted.
