Accra, May 24, GNA – Mr Ikechi Uko, a Tourism Expert, has called on tourism practitioners in the West Africa sub-region to leverage the emergence of technology to drive tourism development in their various countries.
He said West Africa countries were not doing enough to attract visitors and tourists because they had failed to take advantage of the internet boom.
Mr Uko was speaking to the Ghana News Agency ahead of the third Accra Weizor event in Accra.
The two-day tourism event slated for May 26 and May 27 is aimed at promoting seamless travel within West Africa.
Accra Weizor is a travel and tourism conference designed to boost tourism in West Africa and it is organised by the Africa Travel Quarterly.
Over the years, the event has become one place for patrons to know more about West Africa tourism offering.
The event will take a critical and profound look at ways to improve travel and tourism growth in West Africa through easy access to towns and cities, improving and simplifying Airport and border processes; standardising hotel and facilities for tourism through shared vision.
He explained that a lot of visitors and tourists all over the world search the internet for exciting places and new experience and the internet could be a platform to showcase their attractive tourism sites and beautiful beaches and other hospitality facilities.
Mr Uko said the need for the introduction of the training as part of the conference was to help stakeholders keep up with the new trend of marketing online which was changing the landscape of promoting business especially within the travel and tourism sector.
He said a familiarisation tour to Cape Coast in partnership with the Ghana Tourism Authority was one of two new features that have been introduced at this year’s event.
“Another first for Accra Weizor, this year will be the launch of the ‘Tourism Top 100 Personalities in West Africa,’ which recognises and awards stakeholders who have distinguished themselves in promoting tourism in the sub-region,” he added.
The Organiser of the Accra Weizor event said the rationale behind the initiative was to let people know the personalities behind the entities that drive tourism in West Africa.
