Wa, April 3, GNA – Over 500 students of the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) participated in an HIV screening exercise during their Students’ Representative Council’s (SRC) Week Celebration in Wa.
The exercise also marked the promotion and distribution of about 15,000 male and female condoms and about 2,500 Information Education and Communication (IE&C) materials.
It was organised by the Upper West Regional Technical Support Unit (TSU) of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and other stakeholders.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the exercise, Mr Dramani Yakubu, GAC Technical Coordinator for the Upper West Region said the objectives were to rekindle the public interest on the existence of HIV and AIDS epidemic to improve behavioral change.
Again, it was to help infected persons know their status and access required healthcare services as well as targeted at helping the region and Ghana for that matter achieve the first 90 of the global 90-90-90 targets to end AIDS by year 2030.
The exercise also seeks to promote condom usage and enhance safe sex behaviours among the students and to a reduction in new HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
Mr Yakubu noted that if students understood HIV epidemiology they would practice safe sexual life styles that would make them less likely to contract the disease.
