VRA to prosecute people engaged in illegal connections
Tamale, Apr 09, GNA - Management of the Volta River Authority of the Northern Electricity Company (VRA-NEDCO) have begun a house-to-house operation in the Savanna belt to identify people engaged in illegal power connections to arrest and prosecute them.The operation seeks to identify all illegal connections, disconnect and arrests culprits for prosecution as means of helping to reduce frequent power challenges in the region as a result of transformer overload.Alhaji Mohammed Siam, Head of Public and Community Relations, VRA-NEDCO told Journalists at the beginning of the operations on Wednesday in Tamale that the company would also use the exercise to retrieve monies from customers who owe.He explained that the exercise was in response to complaints by a section of the public that many people in the region were tapping the power illegally.Alhaji Siam said internal checks and field observations made by his outfit confirmed the assertion by the public hence the exercise.Checks at all the seven houses we visited indicated there had been illegal wiring and most of the heavy gadgets were not connected to the main meter line. We look at the persons consumption history and then compare it to the current consumption and that informs us if the fellow is engaging in illegality or not, he explained.He said last week VRA-NEDCO was able to recover about GH 50, 000 from some few people who were caught in some illegalities.Alhaji Siam cautioned the public to desist from such acts since persons caught in the act would be prosecuted.GNA
