John Agyekum Kufuor
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has reaffirmed his confidence in Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership abilities, dismissing calls to remain neutral as a statesman.
He described Dr. Bawumia, who is the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate for the December 7 elections, as the “future” of Ghana, while praising his exceptional economic management skills and commitment to national development.
Addressing criticism at an event held at the Ofori Panin Palace in Abuakwa South on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, the former president expressed concern about how senior citizens and seasoned politicians are sidelined in national conversations, despite their wealth of experience and wisdom.
The Movement for Change flagbearer, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen had earlier argued that Mr. Kufuor’s public endorsements could compromise his status as a national figure.
However, responding to the criticism, former President Kufuor highlighted the societal tendency to relegate elders to a symbolic role, labeling them as “statesmen” and discouraging their active participation in national discourse.
“When you grow up, people do not want to talk about national issues with you. They tend to retire you from such matters,” he lamented.
“Today, there is an English word called statesman. But what I know is that as you grow older, the wiser and more knowledgeable you become. Yet, when something comes up and I try to voice my opinion, they say, ‘Hey, you can’t do that because you are a statesman,’” he asserted.
According to him, he cannot remain neutral on crucial issues like choosing a national leader and promoting development, especially when his adopted son, Dr. Bawumia, is involved.
He reserved particular praise for Vice President Dr. Bawumia, whom he described as a promising leader and a key player in Ghana’s economic recovery during his administration.
“What is happening now is a matter of governance and management of this country. The political party that gave me the opportunity to serve Ghana has selected my own son, who I spotted long ago in 2003. I’m talking about Mr. Bawumia,” Mr. Kufuor said.
He reminisced about discovering Dr. Bawumia’s potential during his tenure as a Deputy Governor at the Bank of Ghana.
“He was young then, but he demonstrated to me that he had a future, and he continued to serve in my government,” the ex-President noted.
Former President Kufuor credited Dr. Bawumia with playing a pivotal role in Ghana’s successful negotiation of the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative.
“If you talk about HIPC, he was part of the people who brokered the deal, which helped Ghana out of the doldrums. Ghana was bankrupt,” he stressed.
