Zonal defending champions, Ampem Darkoa and Hasaacas Ladies began their campaign in this year’s National Women’s League (NWL) with emphatic wins as the competition kicked off over the weekend.
Ampem Darkoa beat Lepo Ladies 4-2 in their game at the Ohene Ameyaw Park at Techiman, while Hasaacas Ladies won 3-1 against visiting Samaria Ladies at Bompeh Park, Takoradi.
Just like they began last season when they kicked off in a whirlwind fashion, Ampem Darkoa continued from where they left off. This time it was not Princella Adubea, but their new recruit and former Fabulous Ladies midfielder, Priscilla Okyere, who led the Techiman-based team to victory, scoring a brace and assisting in the two other goals scored by Hamdia Fio and Mavis Owusu.
Lepo’s goals were scored by Basira Alhassan and Fuseina Mumuni.
Hasaacas Ladies, with most of their key players gone to abroad, managed to ditch Samaria as Lily Niber-Lawrence (a brace) and Veronica Appiah earned the three points.
The NWL Season Five started on a bright note as all the centres recorded goals, with the exception of the Police Ladies versus LadyStrikers encounter at the Carl Reindorf Park. That match, despite being barren, produced a lot of excitement.
Ashtown also earned an important win over Fabulous Ladies, beating them 2-1 in their game.
In other results, debutants Kumasi Academy Ladies travelled to Wa to beat Real Upper Ladies 2-0, Northern Ladies and Prisons Ladies played to a 1-1 draw in Tamale, while Soccer Intellectuals beat Immigration 2-0, with Elmina Sea Lions also winning 2-0 against newcomers, Holy Royals.
