The Chief of the Bunbuna/Daan Traditional Area in the North East Region, Bagut Alhassan Kancho II, has decried the growing incidents of the killing of persons accused of witchcraft within his jurisdiction.
The concern follows the death of a woman who was accused of being a witch at Sagbun under the Bunbuna/Daan Traditional Area.
According to Citi News sources, the woman was said to have died in her sleep, but it was later revealed that she was strangled to death.
In an interview with Citi News, the Chief said he intends to mobilize his community members and educate them on the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2023, in Parliament.
“This type of crime is becoming rampant in my jurisdiction, and the death of this woman has added to two deaths for this year alone. Whenever someone is suspected of being a witch, instead of allowing the traditional rulers to sit down and resolve the issue, they take the matter into their own hands. So, as to what to do, I intend to mobilize the people and tell them what Parliament has done and the consequences of killing innocent people in the name of witchcraft.”
