The Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has raised concerns about the government’s transparency regarding the construction and funding of the La General Hospital.
He asserts that the government has been untruthful in its reportage on the hospital and that the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, has consistently evaded questions related to the project.
The La General Hospital faced demolition in July 2020 due to severe structural issues reported by the hospital administration.
On August 10, 2020, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo initiated the La General Hospital Redevelopment Project, but as of now, construction has not commenced.
The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has attributed the delay in reconstruction to funds being withheld by the project’s sponsors, citing Ghana’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the primary cause.
In contrast, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh disputes the government’s statements, alleging a lack of factual accuracy in their communication about the project.
“Anytime you ask a question, they will say the contractor will go to the site very soon. The last time we even went to the site, they told me that because they said the contractor will go to the site, that is why I have gone there… They keep lying to us. One lie after the other, lying, lying. And there was a time they said they were going to leave it on the Agenda 111. So they are not telling us the truth,” he said.
