Three out of 13 drivers who were arrested for breaching road regulations on the Legon-GIMPA bypass in Accra have been fined GHS720.00 each by the La Motor Court.
The erring drivers including the Member of Parliament for Sissala West, Mohammed Sukparu, amongst others were arrested on Wednesday for driving against traffic and using unauthorized sirens and strobe lights.
The drivers were charged for careless and inconsiderate driving.
Speaking to Citi News, the in-charge of Operations at the Central Police MTTD, ASP Richard Nyarko said all drivers who were arrested both on Wednesday and Thursday will face the full rigours of the law.
“Three of the drivers who were arrested appeared in court today. They were each fined GHS 720, and they paid and later asked to go to the Achimota Village Police, where their vehicles were released to them. So, we are urging the general public that while driving, they should respect all traffic regulations. If they infringe on the regulations, the police will arrest them and put them before court”, he said.
In the meantime, the remaining 10 recalcitrant drivers are yet to mount the dock at the court.
Most of the drivers arrested cited emergency as the reason for their offense.
That was however the second time in two weeks that Citi TV‘s War Against Indiscipline team has visited the area.
On why the police returned to the Legon Bypass, Director of Operations at the Police MTTD, Supt. Sasu Mensah, said, “we have had reports that… people are still not abiding by traffic rules and regulations [hence the decision].”
