MThe Host of ‘The Point of View’ on Citi TV and the Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Bernard Avle, has called on the government and the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to work towards regaining the confidence and trust of the citizens.
Bernard Avle in an editorial on Citi TV’s Point of View show called for extensive and far-reaching reforms in the way and manner the military and the Police have conducted themselves in recent times.
Bernard Avle began the editorial by highlighting about 12 reported instances of military misconduct between March 2018, to June 2021.
Out of those 12, about nine of them are merely said to be under investigation without clear closure or punishment for the perpetrators.
Among other things, Mr. Avle called for the punishment for lawless soldiers who were seen assaulting residents in Wa in a video that was widely circulated on social media.
He further called for the publishing of outcomes of all internal processes undertaken by the military to curb indiscipline and misconduct.
Bernard Avle also argued against the use of soldiers in regular police or civilian operations.
Below are the recommendations made by Bernard Avle in the editorial:
- Military
-Lawless soldiers don’t deserve special treatment.
Even if internal processes are undertaken, the public need to know the outcome of the processes - Even if the activities are sanctioned, people must be held accountable.
The findings must not be treated like those of the past - Government penchant for using soldiers in regular police operations needs to stop
- The penchant in using the military to resolve community issues is a relic of the revolutionary past.
- Ghana Police
-The construct for policing globally is changing . The Ghana police need to invest in intelligence gathering - -The Ghana police service needs to be equipped and trusted to maintain civil order
- -The nature and training and continuous education needs to change to gain the trust of citizens and help their intelligence

Background
On Thursday, July 1, 2021, a video went viral showing armed soldiers beating some residents of Wa on the street.
Some eyewitnesses who spoke to Citi News said the soldiers claimed they were searching for their stolen mobile phone.
They recounted how the officers, who could not be immediately identified, stopped tricycles and brutalised residents, particularly young men.
The incident added to a tumultuous week for the military after is personnel opened fire on protesters in Ejura on Tuesday and killed two while injuring six others.
A public inquiry has been instituted into the Ejura incident, with a resolution expected by July 10 after a directive by the President.
