A total of 26 Burkinabes have been arrested in the Upper West Region for entering Ghana illegally.
19 of them were arrested at the Gwollu stretch bordering neighbouring Burkina Faso on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, while the remaining seven were busted at Nandom on the same day.
They were arrested by the Upper West Regional Police Command.
The irregular migrants arrested at Gwollu were onboard a Hyundai bus with registration number GS-4763-12, abound Wa.
They included 13 males and six females. Their ages ranged between 8 and 58.
Immigration investigations revealed that the migrants were economic migrants journeying to Ghana for farming and other labourer activities.
They were screened by the health personnel before being handed over to the Burkina Faso authorities on the other side of the border in Burkina Faso.
Nandom arrest
With regard to those arrested in Nandom, the seven migrants allegedly entered Ghana through unapproved routes on the Hamile stretch.
They were fished out of Ghanaian passengers onboard a Metro Mass Transit bus en route to Sunyani.
The all-male irregular migrants were repatriated through the Hamile border post.
“As part of our efforts to clamp down on irregular, undocumented or prohibited migration to and from Ghana, we’re urging the general public to support the Border Security agencies to fight the menace”, Upper West Regional Public Affairs Officer of the Immigration Service, Asst. Insp. Ibn Yussif Duranah Abdul-Mumin Seidu said in a statement.
