The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Member of the Parliamentary Service Board, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has stated that the New Patriotic Party’s objection to his Parliamentary Service Board appointment is baseless.
According to him, the response of the NPP to his appointment is shocking, especially since the Speaker was not obligated to nominate anyone from the NPP for a place on the Board but still did.
“In the past, the Speaker always nominated the people on the Parliamentary Service Board from his political party because certainly, the Speaker would usually not nominate anyone from the other side. In this particular case, I will say that Speaker Bagbin has been very magnanimous in allowing NPP to nominate one person from their side to join the Board. So I was extremely surprised when I heard that the NPP was still objecting to my nomination by the Speaker as a member of the Board. I don’t think he should have allowed any former NPP MP to be nominated at all.”
Speaking on Citi TV’s Face to Face, Mr. Nketiah argued that as long as he met the criteria for nomination, the Speaker did not commit a crime by appointing him. He added that this was an invitation to assist the Speaker to discharge his duties.
“Parliament is the citadel of politics so it is interesting to hear people saying that we shouldn’t introduce politics into parliament. The lawmakers know why they make certain laws and they know why they put certain restrictions on some people not occupying certain positions and in this particular case, they didn’t talk about anybody’s other assignment in Politics. In this case, the criteria is that you have to be a former member of parliament and I was one for 12 years so I don’t know who is better qualified than myself.”
Asiedu Nketiah was named as one of four persons to constitute the new Parliamentary Service Board on Monday, March 29, 2021, by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
Mr. Bagbin announced the names as part of a report he received from a special advisory committee set up for that purpose.
The Parliamentary Service Board is chaired by the Speaker and governs the activities of the legislature.
The other members of the Board are Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Haruna Iddrisu and Mr. Abraham Osei Aidoo.
