The Akatsi South MP, Bernard Ahiafo, has made the case for better funding for the operations of the Ghana School of Law.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr. Ahiafo, who is a Ranking Member of the Constitutional Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, said the school has not been able to expand its operations to train more lawyers due to the inadequate resources allocated to the school.
During the debate before the approval of GHS 137 million as budgetary allocation for the Attorney General, the Akatsi South MP called for urgent steps to be taken to financially resource the law school.
“When we met the Ghana School of Law, the indication was that they generate revenue; about GHS7 million. The government will take the GHS7 million and give them GHS3 million to GHS4 million.”
“As a result, they cannot expand,” he added.
According to Mr. Ahiafo, the Ghana School of Law has plans to build a law school village.
He further said improving their budget could help intakes of the school.
“In the year 2021, if given adequate allocation, they can admit more than the projection of the 550 students. They will be able to admit 800 students. And this is the only way we can begin to clear the backlog of the students yarning to enter the Ghana School of Law.”
