The National Peace Council has urged more women participation and inclusion in conflict resolution and peace building efforts in the Ghanaian society.
The council said the role of women in Ghana’s socioeconomic development cannot be underestimated.
Chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante made the call during a capacity-building on conflict prevention, conflict resolution and peace building for Queen mothers in the Ashanti Region.
The two-day workshop which brought together twenty-five (25) Queen mothers from paramouncies within the Asante Kingdom was in partnership with the Canadian Government and sponsored by Canada Local Initiative Fund.
The workshop was aimed at strengthening and enhancing women’s leadership capacity, policymaking capacity, advocacy and negotiation skills to inform and influence the traditional peace building process for regional development.
It was also to address inclusiveness, equality and fairness by duly recognizing women in peace building process so as to promote meaningful engagement with Queen mothers in prevention and resolution of electoral related conflicts, before, during and the 2020 general elections.
Professor Asante emphasized that women can still play roles in conflict resolution despite the greater number of men who are already playing that role.
He noted that women in recent times have been more daring as compared to the past, indicating that “it presents us with a golden opportunity to capitalize on by rendering the necessary support we can so as we increase their voices and participation in conflict management during and after the 2020 general elections”.
Political and Public Affairs Counsellor of the Canadian Embassy, Pasquale Salvaggio indicated that the Canadian Government recognized the role traditional leaders especially Queen mothers play in the promotion and maintenance of peace in the communities.
He added that the engagement with the Queen mother was key since they maintain peace within their communities before, during and after elections.
The Queen mothers and other participant told Citi News the engagement was worthwhile since it has helped to building their capacities in the technicalities of conflict resolution matters.
