The Ghanaians Against Child Abuse (GACA) campaign has reached 16 communities in the Volta Region in the fourth phase of the campaign, preaching reforms to traditional forms of parenting while touching on the government’s policy on Girls’ Iron-Folate Tablet Supplementation among others.
Speaking at the last session of the fourth phase in Vakpo Yordanu in the North Dayi District of the Volta Region, Madam Charity Mensah from the Social Welfare unit of the assembly encouraged parents not to discourage their children from pursuing their ambitions but rather encourage them to educate themselves while pursuing their dreams.
“Canes and abusé are no more the order of the day,” Madam Charity Mensah told the gathering.
She said the new order is for children to feel loved at home and in turn feel confident to share their experiences with their parents, a practice which she said helps to produce more responsible citizens.
Dora Adzo Dzamboe, 38, mother of five said the dramatization of child upbringing in the traditional and new accepted modes was a memorable way of teaching the community how to raise their children without making them timid.
“I have realized that things I say at home to my children inform what they become in society, it’s insightful to realize that such abuses cause my children to lose confidence and I have realized that is bad” D’adzo said in Ewe.
In the drama, titled; “Our Children,” written by Nii Commey and directed by Jude Kubiti of the Volta Centre for National Culture which explored issues of teenage pregnancy, sanitation, and child online protection, Wofa Aklito who whose only understanding of parenting is the traditional method, using canes and denying his children their right to education was educated to understand the value of education and to also appreciate the place of cordiality in parenting.
The drama also shone a light on the right ways of handwashing and the need for parents to allow their girl children to be administered with folate tablets under the ‘Girls’ Iron-Folate Tablet Supplementation’ program.
The GACA campaign is a collaboration between the ministries of Children and Social Protection, Local Government and Rural Development and Education, and the Canadian Government, USAID, Korean International Cooperation Agency, and UNICEF, under a Child Protective Social Drive initiative.
