The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Kwaku Asoma Cheremeh has indicated that all is set for the installation of a new weighbridge to be completed within two months at Apemanim junction to verify actual manganese exports volumes.
Mr. Cheremeh spoke to Citi News after interacting with officials of Ghana Manganese Company at Nsuta.
He also inspected the site for the weighbridge saying that another faulty one at the company will also be repaired by a technician expected from South Africa.
“We had issues with the land. Now it is settled. Today they’ll clear the land. The weighbridge is sitting at Takoradi so after clearing the land, we’ll test the soil and then put some concrete on the ground and mount the weighbridge after which all trucks conveying manganese or bauxite would have to go through it. We want to make it very firm and that may take about one to two months for us to complete. We will be working day and night to ensure that we attain the goal we have set for ourselves,” she said.
“It is very important that we check them from this end. There is one at the mining site. We’ll know the weight and the tonnage they are conveying and when it gets to Apemanim, we’ll crosscheck and ascertain the figures here before they get to the port. There too, we’ll check again before we load the ship so that the exact figure that is being moved out of Ghana will be ascertained,” he continued.
He added that the decision to install the weighbridge is as a result of the lack of transparency that has surrendered actual manganese export volumes and hoped the new measure will bring clarity to that.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources began his tour in the Western Region two days ago to inspect weighbridges at the Ghana Manganese Company.
These bridges were installed in accordance with the government’s measure to ensure transparency in the export of manganese.
According to the Minister, the visit will among other things tackle the misappropriation of state funds in the industry and address allegations of mistrust and tax default.
