The Techiman Municipal Assembly in the Bono East Region has taken steps to demolish over thirty buildings which are in terrible states and not good for human habitation.
The Assembly has written to inform owners of some dilapidated structures in the Municipality including the one that recently collapsed at Twimia, killing an eleven-year-old child following a heavy downpour, of the move.
Speaking to Citi News, Techiman Municipal NADMO Coordinator, Eric Asiedu said that some of the owners are adamant but the Assembly is seeking a court order to carry out the demolition exercise.
“We have written to the Techiman Circuit Court for a court order because we want to follow the law. We just can’t take the law into our hands and start demolishing the buildings. For now, we have even identified more than thirty buildings that will be demolished. We have the house numbers, state of building and pictures which will be attached to the letter,” he said.
The problem of dilapidated and abandoned buildings in the country is growing rapidly as community leaders and government grapple with what to do with these vacant and abandoned buildings, which, over time, become eyesores.
In June last year, a two-storey market store being constructed at the Techiman Market collapsed at dawn, claiming the life of one person and injuring another.
The then Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, who visited the site, attributed the collapse of the building to shoddy work, citing the use of inferior materials in the construction of other buildings in the market.
