279 students at the University of Education, Winneba have benefited from a scholarship package under the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Fund (VCSF).
The students will each receive a GHC 1,000 as sponsorship package and have the opportunity to reapply again for renewal provided they maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
This was made known at a brief presentation ceremony on the campus of the University of Education, Winneba.
Speaking to Citi News at the presentation ceremony, Professor Dominic Mensah chairman for the Vice Chancellor’s scholarship fund explained that a total of GHc279,000 has been disbursed for the 2018/19 academic year adding that the scholarship fund is opened to all.
He indicated that the initiative was instituted by the University to reduce the financial burden on brilliant but needy students.
“This is to enable such students to continue to access quality education from the university,” Prof. Mensah added.
“The VCSF is solely funded by the university and opened to all needy but brilliant Ghanaian students persuing undergraduate programmes at UEW,” the chairman said.
He averred that with the magnanimity of management, the number of beneficiaries have grown from 120 in previous years to 279 in 2018/19 academic year representing a 129% increase.
“The Vice Chancellor’s office has observed that some students have potentials but are faced with financial challenges forcing them to either defer their programme of drop out altogether and that is why this initiative was introduced,” Prof. Mensah said.
The chairman of the fund also charged beneficiaries to work extra hard to justify the investment the University is making in them and also strive to meet the minimum GPA of 2.5 in other for them to be maintained on the VCSF.
Some elated beneficiaries who spoke to Citi News expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor Rev. Father Professor Anthony Afful Broni and the Management of the university for coming up with such an initiative.
“I thank the VC and his team for coming up with such an initiative to help us one student said,” one of the students add.
