The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) has asked mining firms whose concessions are being encroached upon by community miners to officially report to the secretariat for immediate action.
Five Mining companies, AngloGold Ashanti, Newmont Ghana, Golden Star Wassa, Persus Mining and Gold Fields have raised concerns over encroachment on their concessions allegedly by some armed community mining operators.
But speaking on the matter, the Head of Monitoring and Evaluation of the Inter-Ministerial taskforce, Francis Asibi Abu said the committee is ready to take action against such encroachers if the mining companies draw their attention to it.
“If there is any company that is complaining that any community miner has taken over their concession, it is out of the way and not with the consent of the IMCIM. We are waiting for such a report to reach us so that we can go in and take them out,” he said.
He explained that the permission to be a community miner is not granted to individuals and as such individuals cannot hold themselves out as community miners to encroach upon concessions of mining companies.
“This program is a partnership with over 10,000 people and a sponsor so it is not like one person claims he is a community miner,” he said.
