Principal, Evangelical Presbyterian College of Education, Dr. Dickson Tsey in the Ho West District of the Volta Region, has called for leadership skills to be made a core element of the educational system of teacher trainees.
He said when trainee teachers acquired skills in leadership they would be better placed to mentor pupils and students to become good leaders in future.
Dr Tsey whose speech was read on his behalf at the eighth Students Representative Council (SRC) week celebration of the College on the theme, “Igniting and Expanding the Possibilities and Leadership in the Trainee Teacher for National Development”, called for game-changing roles to be assigned the trainees to correct and sharpen their skills to prepare them for life endeavours.
He said life was about decision making and that it was important to build that skill in students to learn how to take critical decisions and lead people.
Dr. Tsey said that was the only way the country could boast of leaders who were accountable, transparent and people focused.
Mr. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzra, Member of Parliament, Ho West, noted that, to take up leadership roles, the trainees needed to be assertive and not play “second fiddle to their counterparts in the traditional universities”.
He said that perception caused many trainee teachers to create barriers to opportunities and leadership positions.
Mr Bedzra said the nation had in the past benefited immensely from student activism through vibrant student leadership and dynamism, urging them to bounce back.
He called on the SRC leadership to live above reproach and eschew acts of cronyism, corruption and selfishness.
Mr Raymond Alorwu, the SRC President, appealed to the College to involve the SRC in committees that deal with students’ issues.
