The Ghana Meteorological Agency has advised people living in low lying areas to relocate ahead of the impending monsoon rainy season.
The agency expects recent heavy rains to continue in the coming days and peak in June.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, the Deputy Chief Director in charge of Forecast at the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Joseph Portuphy said, “this is the time for those who are living in the low-lying areas to move. This is the appropriate time for them to move out.”
“When you have 20 to 30 mm of rain, Accra will be flooded because everywhere is saturated… any little rain will not be able to percolate into the soil and therefore it will run off and destroy lives and property,” he explained.
The flooding in urban areas like Kumasi, which used to be free of flooding in years past has been blamed on buildings on waterways and waterlogged areas.
“Those places would have been storm drains for keeping water for them to runoff later,” he noted.
As further proof of the culpability of human activity in flooding, he observed that areas with the highest rainfall in Western Ghana do not have to contend with serious flooding.
“When you look at the rain that is happening in the Axim area, it is more than what is happening in Accra and Kumasi but I don’t think we have reported any flooding which has destroyed lives and properties,” Mr. Portuphy stated.
