The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has condemned Monday’s shooting incident at the Ashanti Regional office of the opposition National Democratic Congress, (NDC).
At a press conference organised by the Commission, it said the incident is yet another evidence of the threat political party vigilantism poses to the country’s security and democracy.
The Executive Director of the NCCE, Josephine Nkrumah told Citi News that the presence and activities of “political thugs” threaten the country’s democracy and there is, therefore, the need for urgent measures to be put in place to disband them.
“The commission reiterates that activities of political thugs wherever it rears its ugly heads have no space in our democracy. The rhetoric we say, must stop and we must see clear commitments by political parties to disband these groups in the interest of peace and stability of Ghana,” she said.
Meanwhile, the new Head of the European Union delegation to Ghana, Ambassador Diana Acconcia, says the international community is also concerned about the spate of violence in the country by vigilante groups and expects the country to address it.
“We are very concerned about the political environment and we call on both the political parties to disband these vigilantes.”
