The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences has expressed concerns about the undue delay in the constitution of the Governing Board of the Ho teaching Hospital to steer the affairs of the facility to properly assume its new status.
The Volta Regional Hospital popularly known as Trafalgar was made a teaching hospital in 2015 to serve as a study facility for the University of Health and Allied Sciences.
This move according to former President John Mahama at the time was to upgrade the Hospital to an appreciable standard to train health professionals from UHAS and also serve the Volta Region.Addressing the second session of the third congregation of the University Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Owusu Gyapong noted with displeasure the undue delay in the constitution of the Board of the Teaching Hospital.
“We are grateful to the government for approving the conversion of the Volta Regional Hospital into a Teaching Hospital. This was announced by the President during his maiden visit to UHAS last July. The facilities at the Volta Regional Hospital are therefore expected to be upgraded and the appropriate management and governance structures put in place to enhance quality training of health professionals at UHAS and improve healthcare delivery in the Region and the country at large.”
“Unfortunately, there has been undue delay in constituting and inaugurating the Governing Board which is expected to lead this process. It is our hope and expectation that this will be given the urgency and priority it deserves”.
Professor Owusu while acknowledging the Chinese and Ghanaian governments for the modest improvement in the infrastructure of the school called on the private investors to consider partnering the school in providing accommodation for growing student population.
“In spite of the modest gains, we still have major infrastructure deficits. We are therefore very open to support from the private sector for partnership to develop the university especially in the area of students’ accommodation.”
