The National Identification Authority (NIA) has extended by two days its registration exercise in the Ga East municipality in Accra.
The NIA begun registration and instance issuance of the national identification cards also known as Ghana cards in Ga East on January 15, 2019, and was due to wrap up on Monday, February 4, 2019.
A statement signed by NIA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, ACI Francis Palmdeti, however, failed to give reasons for the extension but it is believed the extension is geared at giving the authority the opportunity to hit its target.
“The National Identification Authority wishes to inform the general public, particularly residents of the Ga East Municipality that, registration will continue till Wednesday 6th February 2019 at all registration centres within the municipality.”
“It will be recalled that registration started in the Ga East Municipality on Tuesday 15th January was scheduled to end on Monday 4th February 2019. All residents who are yet to register are entreated to take advantage of the extension and get registered,” the statement added.
The NIA began the mass registration exercise in the Adentan Municipality on November 5, 2019.
It was extended was extended by three days after which the NIA moved to La Nkwantanang/Madina Municipality where the exercise took off from 3rd-22nd December 2018.
124,162 persons issued Ghana cards at Adentan
NIA had said it registered and issued over 124,000 persons national identification cards within the Adentan Municipality.
According to Palmdeti, the figure exceeded their target of 78,000 at the close of the registration exercise.
“We as at close of work on Wednesday we had registered 124,162 people in Adentan. We just observed from the data we have received that we have exceeded our target. We were considering the census figures of 2010 with some plus or minuses and so we felt that considering the size of Adentan and having a lot of working people in that area we may not hit our target. We put it at 78,000 but what we have now is way above our target,” he added in a Citi News.
