The Eastern Regional Coordinating Council and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is advocating for the general public to come forth with necessary information and details which will lead to the arrest and further prosecution of suspects and perpetrators of rape.
As of September 2018, a total number of 135 defilement cases and 52 rape cases had been recorded in the Eastern Region a situation REGSEC describes as unfortunate and disturbing.
Addressing Journalist at the Ghana Journalist Association soirée and the maiden edition of a stakeholders review meeting in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional Minister Eric Kwakye Darfour called on all journalist and media houses in the country to use their platforms to encourage rape and defilement victims to report perpetrators.“We have to address the issue of rape and defilement which is on the ascendancy, I do not know what is wrong with our men in this region. As of September 2018, 135 defilement cases and 52 rape cases were recorded, and it is very bad”.
“Journalist will have to take this up and do more education and assure rape and defilement victims to come out openly so that perpetrators can be apprehended and prosecuted because it is not a good story to tell that rape cases are on the increase in the Eastern Region so the GJA should come on board and help us all to publicize these nonferrous activities and bring the perpetrators to book for am sure this is a way we can use to reduce it”.
The Nkawkaw Member of Parliament also pleaded with chief’s and other traditional rulers not to cover-up rape and defilement cases when they are brought to their attention but rather refer and forward the issues to the police and appropriate authorities.
“Sometimes when these incidents happen Nananom, and other chiefs come in to say this issue needs to be resolved home and not to be taken to public because it may disgrace the victim and subject them to public ridicule, I do not share that line of argument so I will plead with all traditional leaders to report these rape and defilement cases to the police immediately they come to your attention for the appropriate authorities to deal with them judiciously”.
