In a bid to prevent vehicular accidents this festive season, the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has urged motorists to desist from acts that will result in the loss of lives on the country’s roads.
The Authority has entreated drivers to observe road signs and respect other users of the road.
In an interview with Citi News, Chief Executive Officer of GHA, Ernest Arthur, also urged pedestrians to be extra vigilant.
“We advise motorists to be cautious when they are on the way. They should drive cautiously by observing all road signs and give due consideration to other motorists especially pedestrians and other vulnerable groups of road users.”“Pedestrians should also be careful anytime they want to cross the road”, he warned.
Carnage during festive celebrations
In Ghana, it is not uncommon to experience a rise in road crashes during festive occasions.
Regulators such as the GHA, the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority continue with their road safety enforcement campaigns before, during and after the festivities.
The exercise is usually to help reduce road crashes during the celebrations.
Regions across the country record high road crashes during the first and last quarter of the year, hence the appropriate authorities are bent on bringing the crashes down by the years.
Drivers are also warned against ignoring police flags and instructions, with travelers urged to report undisciplined drivers to the police.
Passengers also have a key role to play in ensuring that those driving them are in good condition at all times.
December 2017: Six die in car crash on Suhum-Nsawam road
Last December for instance, six people were confirmed dead after a minibus rammed into a container that had fallen off a truck at Teacher-Mante on the Suhum-Nsawam road prior to Christmas.
According to the Ayensuano District Police Commander, DSP Charles Ahiamale, the truck was carrying a container loaded with logs from Kumasi to Accra.
DSP Charles Ahiamale said container fell off the truck on the outskirts of Teacher-Mante causing havoc as the first vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser run into it.
This first crash did not result in any significant casualties, according to indications from police.
But at 2:0oam the next morning, the container was still on the road and the second vehicle, a Toyota minibus, also run into it “after ignoring police signals to stop,” DSP Ahiamale said.
