Citi News’ Western Regional Correspondent, Obrempong Yaw Ampofo, has been adjudged the 2nd Best Mining Reporter ( 1st Runner-up), at the 2018 Ghana Mining Industry Awards.
Obrempong’s online analysis of the mining angle to the issues that clouded the death of late Major Adam Maxwell Mahama in May 2017, won him the recognition by the adjudicating board of the Ghana Mining Industry Awards.
In an in-depth article, titled, Obrempong asks: Was Upper Denkyira West DCE right after all?, the journalist, whose work focuses a lot more on the extractive as well as the fisheries sector, condemned the gruesome murder of the young soldier, but also discussed how pieces of information gathered pointed to the disconnection in the account given on the event leading to his death.
Journalistic materials sent to compete for the prestigious award organized by the Ghana Chamber of Mines must show the analytical value, objectivity and rigor in reporting, specialist knowledge, news value, impact, as well as originality and integrity.
Obrempong, also won a special award for the role he played in the campaign against illegal mining (galamsey) during the 22nd Ghana Journalists Association Award gala in 2016.
His works on the energy sector, got him nominated for the maiden Ghana Energy Wards in 2017.
