The Holy Spirit Senior High School in Chamba in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The school established in 2009 by a German expatriate, Rev. Fr Josef Renner, has a current student population of 111 comprising of 64 boys and 47 girls.
The school was established to contribute to the development of the area.
It has so far produced graduates who are in the various tertiary institutions in the country pursing various programmes.
However, despite the successes chalked by the school over the years, the financial status of school has worsened following the introduction of government’s flagship programme, Free Senior High School, which has affected student enrollment in private senior high schools.
Speaking at the launch of the anniversary, the Headmaster of the Holy Spirit Senior High School, Rev. Fr. Camillo Bonsuuri, said the introduction of the “Free Senior High” has taken a toll on the financial standings of private schools as they depend solely on enrollment which has reduced as a result.
He explained to Citi News how the situation has affected the operations of the school.
“Our financial burdens were compounded last year with the introduction of the Free Senior High programme in the country which caused our student enrollment to reduce drastically. We enrolled only 10 new students into form one last year. As we are all aware, all private schools rely on school fees to survive. They cannot function without an adequate number of students. So last year, we were really in crisis as we watched the stampede of students for enrollment into free public senior high schools. Even graduates from our own junior high schools turned their backs on us,” the Headmaster lamented.
The Headmaster was however grateful to the Founder of the school, Rev. Fr. Josef Renner and the German partners for their continuous support to the school.
“Our story would have been different as we operate on a weak financial base, but for the continuous support of Father Renner and our German benefactors. We wish to express our profound gratitude to them.”
On his part, the Vicar General of the Catholic Church in Yendi, Very Rev Kajal David, advised the students to take advantage of the school to be disciplined in whatever they do.
The school runs three courses in General Arts, Business and General Science.
