Broadcast Journalist with Citi FM and Citi TV, Umaru Sanda Amadu, has presented 3,000 books to three basic schools in his home district.
The gesture forms part of the renowned journalist’s efforts to give back to the community he belongs.
The schools to have benefited from the donation include Sanda’s alma mater, Asutsuare Junction D/A Basic School, and the New Jerusalem Basic School; both in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region.
The donation was supported by a friend of Sanda and a team from a Non-Governmental Organisation, GEDAid.
Motivation
The host of Eyewitness News indicated that the donation had become necessary due to the unavailability of such books at the school to improve teaching and learning.
In a post on facebook, he recounted his childhood reading experience that has pushed him to help the vulnerable.
“There are some things you feel obliged to do as a #CommunityChild. It’s for this reason that I returned to my community to donate three thousand books to the Asutsuare Junction, New Jerusalem and Kongo Basic Schools. I did the donation with the support of a friend and the team at GEDAid. It was a beautiful thing watching some of the children read paragraphs from the story books donated and hearing them answer some of my questions.”
“Here is my motivation for doing this. As a child, I loved reading. I read anything (my favourite was the questions and answers under the “Robot Bubble Gum” wrappers). I used to lead my class in reading the English text books. There were times I was called to the seniors class (Class 6) to read a passage for them after which I was given the cane to whip my seniors. Fun, init?
Well, we didn’t have story books at Asutsuare Junction so I used to write the words, STORY BOOK on a scrap of paper which my illiterate mother would tie at the end of her cloth before setting off at dawn to sell wagashie (a dairy product) in Accra”, he wrote.
He further encouraged other people to also extend a helping hand to their alma mater to spur students on.
“If you are reading this, please go back to your (village) school and give them books to read or simply, encourage them. They need it more than you can imagine.”
Previous donations
In June 2018, Sanda also donated 20 computers to two schools in his home district of Shai Osudoku in the Greater Accra Region.
The beneficiary schools include his alma mater, Asutsuare Junction D/A Basic School and New Jerusalem Basic School.
That particular donation was made the donation with support from the Afrinspire group.
