A flagbearer hopeful of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sylvester Mensah, has said he will push for the formation of a party-government committee that will be in charge of government appointments should the delegates of the party elect him as flagbearer for election 2020 and subsequently as President of the Republic.
Addressing delegates of the party in Garu in the Upper East region, Mr. Mensah bemoaned situations where people worked very hard for victory in elections only for others who made no contributions to the process to influence who gets appointed to state positions.
Mr. Mensah, who spoke extensively on the need for the party to review its constitution to accommodate the suggestion, said “this will deepen the involvement of the party in political appointments whenever the party is in power.”
According to him, it will enable the party to assist the president in selecting appointees with deep understanding of the party’s philosophy to best serve the interest of the grassroots members and by extension the country.
The former NHIA boss was received by over three hundred executives from both the branch and constituency levels.
He said the NDC as a party must go back to its roots and familiarize itself with the ideals of probity, good governance, accountability and social justice which he said formed the bedrock of the party.
The former banker is on record to have said that the NDC under former President Mahama lost the 2016 elections because his government failed to provide hope to Ghanaians, adding that Ghana needs a new leader with a new vision for the country.
Sylvester Mensah is one of about a dozen people seeking to lead the NDC in election 2020.
Some other notable persons in the race for the NDC top job are former President John Mahama, Prof. Joshua Alabi, Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah and Alban Bagbin.
The party is hoping to elect a flagbearer for election 2020 before the end of the year.
