The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has provided additional working tools for its “street sweepers” to enhance their visibility and operation.
The items include branded tricycles, waste collection sacks, branded reflectors and waste pickers.
The sweepers include those tasked to clean some major streets namely the Independence Avenue, John Evans Atta Mills High Street, John Agyekum Kufuor Avenue, Dr. Busia Avenue, Asafoatse Nettey Street, Lutterodt Street and Mortuary Road.
Their tasks include weeding road medians, sweeping kerbs, and streets as well as desilting gutters and drains as part of the AMA’s “Clean Accra Project.”

On Saturday the sweepers were engaged in cleaning activities that last about four hours in all the six sub-metros of AMA (Ashiedu Keteke, Osu Klottey, Ablekuma South, Ablekuma Central, Okaikoi South and Ayawaso Central.)
In an interaction with the Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah who was on the field to verify the efficiency of the new strategy being implemented said the Assembly has embarked on synchronized activities all targeted at realizing the President’s vision of a clean Accra.
These activities he said include, enforcement of the by-laws, public education to encourage attitudinal change and the provision of logistics and equipment.

He revealed that the AMA would sustain the exercise and advised city dwellers and commuters to support the vision by engaging in environmentally friendly activities.
He pointed out that environmental cleanliness was a joint responsibility of city authorities and citizens adding that “respect for sanitation is a civic responsibility.”

He urged citizens to play their part by not littering the streets or dumping rubbish into drains.
