The Mines and Energy Committee in Parliament has welcomed the removal of Boakye Agyarko as Energy Minister.
According to George Mireku Duker, Vice Chairman of the committee, the dismissal was commendable.
President Akufo-Addo on Monday, August 6, 2018, sacked the Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko.A statement from the Communications Directorate of the Presidency said Mr. Agyarko’s firing “takes immediate effect.”
But in a Citi News interview, Mr. Duker said: “it’s a good call if there are misunderstandings in the energy sector and you [Boakye Agyarko] are to step aside for the dust to settle.”
“I also commend the President for being a listening father because you have a situation where people make contributions here and there for better explanations. You have a situation where the president says yes, I have listened to your plight and then it is prudent for the minister in charge to step aside… It is a good call, and I support it,” he added.
Why was Boakye Agyarko sacked?
The Presidency has confirmed that Boakye Agyarko’s dismissal as the Energy Minister was due to his handling of the AMERI novation and amendment agreement.
The Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin said President Nana Akufo-Addo was acting in the best interests of the country.
“In a nutshell, it [the dismissal] is to do with the issue of the controversial AMERI deal. That is why the President has relieved the Minister for Energy of his position.”
“We all know the circumstances. We all know the story that has panned out as a result of the deal and the President believes that in the interest of the Ghanaian people, in the interest of the country and in the interest of his own administration, the Minister for Energy, Hon. Boakye Agyarko should be relieved of his position,” Eugene Arhin told Citi News.
