A 29-year-old driver accused of attempting to break into the premises of the Church of Pentecost at Apemso near Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with the intent of stealing church properties, has been remanded into prison custody by a Kumasi Circuit Court.
Yaw Addai, the accused, pleaded not guilty and will reappear before the Court presided over by Mrs. Patricia Amponsah, on August 14, this year.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ms. Florence Adda, prosecuting, told the court that Addai resides at Asafo, while his accomplice, Anokye Da-costa, resides at Ashtown, all in Kumasi.
Anokye, who was standing trial on a different charge in another court could however not appear in Court.
She said the complainant in the case was a teacher and a member of the Church of Pentecost at Apemso.
ASP Adda said the church in recent times had experienced a series of theft case of their properties, including musical instruments.
The Church consequently mounted surveillance on its premises to help arrest the culprits and bring them to book.
She said on May 25, 2018 at about 1:30 am, neighbours who stayed close to the church premises and are witnesses in the case, spotted Addai and his accomplice coming out of a Daewoo taxicab with registration number AS 924-13, within the church premises.
ASP Adda said the suspects in the process of removing the burglarproof metal bars on one of the windows, were apprehended.
The witnesses arrested and brought them to the KNUST Police station.
In their caution statement, they admitted the offence.
The prosecution said after police investigations, they were charged with the offence.
