The Headmistress of the Koforidua Riis Presby Model Junior High School, Mrs. Deborah Affumwaa Nyarko, has asked parents and other stakeholders to as a matter of urgency regulate the use of mobile phones by minors at home.
According to the headmistress, the influx of mobile phones and other devices that make internet accessible in almost every Ghanaian home is having a great toll on the academic performances of children, especially minors who are always in constant use of the devices.
Mrs. Deborah Affumwaa Nyarko gave the advice when she addressed parents and guardians at the school’s 16th Graduation and Maiden Speech and Prize Giving Day on the theme, “Curbing the negative influence of social media on academic performance, the role of stakeholders”.
“As teachers, we are always guided by our core mandate through GES to produce well discipline students who will be able to fit into society and uphold its cultural values. It is in this light that the theme for this year’s programme, “Curbing the negative influence of social media on academic performance, the role of stakeholders”, is most appropriate for the occasion”.
“You will all agree with me that mobile phones in the hands of minors and its accompanying consequences or social media menace are a canker that is eating deep into the society and destroying peaceful homes, marriages and so forth. Worst of all is how it is drawing down the standard of education currently which in effect increases streetism and other social vices we have been witnessing now.”
Mrs. Deborah Affumwaa Nyarko also advised parents and other stakeholders to restrict the use of mobile phones by minors at certain hours.
“We all have to put our hands on deck to curb this social menace in order to secure a bright future for our dear children by instituting some measures to minimize the use of mobile phones by minors, and also restrict sites they visit on the internet. Parents should not leave their mobile phones to them, but assist them in their homework and ensure they study at most times instead of surfing the net”.
Prioritize quality education in public schools
Mrs. Deborah Affumwaa also spoke about the need to improve the quality of education in public schools, saying “the usefulness and benefits of education will not be realized if quality education is compromised”.
“It should also not be a yardstick for learners to only pass their exams to qualify for admission in the next level of education, but it should also equip learners with requisite knowledge and skills that will make them employable in the competitive global market”.
She said quality education should also provide learners with emotional and social skills by which they can peacefully co-exist with others in their immediate environment.
“…So I will call on government to as a matter of urgency support public education by providing us with the needed conducive facilities, teaching and learning materials promptly and on time to motivate, encourage and enhance academic work” she said.
On her part, the New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive Officer, Madam Comfort Asante, who was the guest speaker lauded the school authorities and staff for upholding a high standard of academic excellence in the municipality and promised to use her good office to support the school.
The school climaxed the week-long anniversary with interclasses quiz competition, gospel rock show and a sports festival.
