The Ghana Central Assembly in the Greater Accra Region has initiated processes to construct a waste to energy factory in the municipality as part of the government’s one-district, one factory policy.
The Assembly revealed that it has already engaged a consortium, Renergenc Limited and Catalyst Group for the establishment of the energy plant at Ablekuma-Joma in Accra.
According to the Municipal Chief Executive, Dr Emmanuel Lamptey, an initial approval has been received from the 1D 1F Secretariat as well as Provisional Whole-Sale Electricity License.The MCE at a meet-the-press said, “the Ga Central Assembly has a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) arrangement with a consortium of Renergenc Limited and Catalyst Group for the establishment of a 48 million Euro Waste to Energy Plant at Ablekuma-Jom as part of the One-District One-Factory policy. Initial approval from the 1D1F Secretariat has been attained as well as Provisional Whole-Sale Electricity License.”
According to him, the site assessment is underway for the project with the operational phase planned for June 2020, adding that the project will provide 500 direct and indirect jobs for the youth in the Municipality, aside from being a revenue stream for the Ga Central Municipal Assembly.”
Dr Emmanuel Lamptey indicated that some youth from the community would be given the opportunity to be trained in Finland for graduate studies.
Sachet water company
He revealed that there is another plan as part of the 1-district 1-factory to establish a sachet and bottled water facility in the area.
“The business plan, designs of the facility are ready, while procurement process for the equipment is currently ongoing. We intend to have it operational by the end of the year,” he said.
While listing some of the achievements of his administration since he took over office about a year ago, Dr Lamptey said the Assembly has successfully acquired its 11-room 2-storey facility at Kwashiebu, which help it to save GH¢ 200,000 spent annually on office rentals and other accommodations.
He also said the assembly had completed the fencing of Odorgono SHS.
Among other things, he said the assembly facilitated the dredging of significant drains in the area to prevent the challenge of the recurrent flooding problem.
As part of efforts to improve revenue collection in the area, he said the Assembly had introduced advanced electronic revenue collection.
“Established advanced technology property rate and business operating permit a data collection and processing using point of sale (POS) devices with a unique software platform. It is intended to broaden the net of rate-payers,” Dr Lamptey said.
