The Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Appeatu, has warned of firm and ruthless action against those who have chosen to be lawless.
He said reckless attacks on police stations and other criminal conducts would not be tolerated.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a police station that comes with residential accommodation for the officers, built at Ahwiaa in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
This together with a health centre had been gifted to the community by a businessman, Mr. Derek Danso Afriyie, popularly known as “DD”, at a cost of GH¢1.2 million.
The IGP said it was important for everybody to do the right thing, to sustain the nation’s peace.
He used the occasion to counsel officers of the police service to maintain high standards of professionalism, and to be professional in the performance of their duties.
He said they should work hard and with total commitment and passion for making the society safe for all. Mr. Asante-Appeatu called on the public to show good understanding, give strong support and cooperate with the police.
He applauded Mr. Afriyie for the gesture and said there could be no doubt that the presence of the police in the area would help to prevent robbery attacks on travelers using the Kumasi-Obuasi road.
Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, reminded the police to ensure that the structures were properly maintained.
He also asked the community to show ownership of projects by the government.
Mr. Afriyie said it was important for other successful Ghanaians to give back to society to complement the government’s efforts. Nana Owusu Kwarteng III, the chief of Ahwiaa, said the gesture was a good example for others to emulate.
Present at the ceremony were Commissioner of Police (COP) Frank Adu Poku, Director General (Services), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Ken Yeboah, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, and his Deputy, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Osei Kwaku Ampofo-Duku.
