Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan is discouraging the media from projecting his personal successes above the larger team victories.
Gyan has been rated Ghana’s all-time top scorer in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) competition after he scored the Black Stars’ first goal in the 19th minute in their game against Mali on Saturday January 21, 2017 at the African Cup of Nations.
This made 50, the number of goals scored for the Black Stars and has taken his AFCON tally to eight goals.
But in a pre-match press conference, Gyan said it was important Ghanaians support the Black Stars through the game against Egypt looking only what they can do together and not what he [Gyan] can do for or on behalf of the team.
“I’m the skipper of the team and always try to lead by example. Personal glory is good but for me the team results count more for me. I’m honestly not focused on that as we go into the game against the Egyptians,” he said.
Gyan added “If I happen to score, of course, I would be excited but if I don’t I’m sure other opportunities would come up if the coach decides to play me in subsequent games. We are here on a mission which is to make the nation proud. Personal glory of scoring 50 goals can be celebrated later.”
Egypt are Ghana’s next opponents in Gabon.
