Accra is set to host the inaugural National Livestock Day, featuring a vibrant food bazaar and a series of engaging activities from October 3-4.
The event will take place at Efua Sutherland Park under the theme: “A Thriving Livestock Industry Towards Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security for Economic Growth.”
Organized by the Ghana National Association of Cattle Farmers (GNACAF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and the Ministry of National Security, the celebration will spotlight the finest livestock products and include exhibitions, panel discussions, and cultural displays.
Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in charge of Livestock, Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru, who launched the event, emphasized the vital role livestock plays in rural livelihoods. He acknowledged the sector’s challenges, such as disease management, access to quality feed, and inadequate infrastructure, which have hindered growth.
Tufeiru highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing these issues through partnerships with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of National Security, which has helped foster peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders.
He also noted efforts to promote semi-intensive and intensive livestock farming systems to enhance productivity and conserve natural resources.
“The National Livestock Day aims to lift farmers out of poverty and bolster Ghana’s standing in the global livestock market,” Tufeiru said.
GNACAF President, Imam Hanafi Sonde, encouraged businesses, organizations, and individuals to support the event. He emphasized that the day provides a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, stakeholder dialogue, and tackling sector challenges such as farmer/herder conflicts and animal health issues.
“The event offers various sponsorship opportunities, and we are open to tailored solutions to meet specific needs,” Sonde added.
Dr. Doris Yaa Osei, Acting Deputy Director of the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research, assured the government’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to achieve national food and nutrition security and boost income through sustainable livestock production.
