Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed confidence that midfielder Enzo Fernandez will integrate smoothly with the squad upon his arrival to the US pre-season tour, despite ongoing disciplinary concerns related to alleged racism.
Fernandez, 23, faced scrutiny after being accused by the French Football Federation of singing a “racist and discriminatory” chant following Argentina’s victory in the Copa America.
The song reportedly questioned the heritage of France’s black and mixed-race players.
Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana had shared an image of the video on Instagram, condemning it as “uninhibited racism.”
FIFA has launched an investigation into the matter, and Fernandez has since issued an apology.
Maresca, who was appointed as Chelsea’s manager in May, downplayed the potential impact of the controversy.
“It is quite easy in terms of the player doing a statement to apologise. The club did the same, so I don’t think there is something to add in terms of the situation. It is already clear and clarified,” Maresca said.
He continued, “I don’t think there are any problems at all. They are all human beings. I don’t think there are any bad intentions from any of them. Enzo clarified the situation, the club the same, so there is nothing to add.”
Chelsea captain Reece James, who joined Maresca in previewing the team’s upcoming match against Wrexham in Santa Clara, expressed his readiness to address any potential issues that may arise.
“It’s a difficult situation, and Enzo has acknowledged he was wrong and quickly put his hand up to apologize to the club, team, and people offended,” James stated.
James noted that while Fernandez has not yet arrived, he hopes to handle any further concerns once Fernandez rejoins the squad. “I’ve spoken to Enzo and everyone involved but the conversations have to stay in-house,” James added.
Chelsea are set to open their 2024/25 Premier League campaign against champions Manchester City.
